Wait, we are getting a new Iron Daemon/Skullcracker in the Helsmiths?!
Ugh, that’s SOOO LONG! Guess we’ve waited like 30 years (not counting Azgorh), what’s another couple months…
If we do it would likely be phase three which I’m guessing (based on other aos ranges) wouldn’t be for at least 2 years.
A change of colour can really change what these guys look like.
(Inspired by some of @Xander ‘s recolouring)
The helmets still look rather silly to me, like he’s duct taped two sword ends to the sides of his helmet
Those recolours aren’t helping me a bit. They look like a bad 3rd party model to me, they still look like mantic could have done in 2010ish
I’ve only noticed the demon face in the gun ![]()

That’s a nice recolour Oxy
Your hate is so pure, so fresh Eddy. It’s impressive.
I think it’s a bit silly they didn’t sculpt any with flames coming out the front. As nobody would guess these are flame throwers
Tbf they’re only very rarely do this kind of thing on their models. Irondrakes also carry flamethrowers that don’t really look the part. I think Fyreslayers’ Hearthguard may even be the exception
One can only aspire to ascend into the aspect of Brian the Negative
I hate to be combative with my learned friend here but I feel a lot of hyperbole is being used with the mantic 2010 comparison! (I heard a similar comment on discord and in my gaming what’s app group) In 2011 mantic released their abyssal dwarfs wave one and they looked like this:
Look at the actual technical level of artistry on display with their bubblegum faces.
Now, I think that criticisms of the artistic direction GW have taken with this new release can be very valid. But to pretend that the sculpting team in Nottingham are anything less than top tier is disingenuous.
For completion sake, mantic did re rerelease their abyssal dwarf troops a few years back:
And they were 1) and improvement and 2) let us not forget the worlds first multi part plastic chaos dwarfs available on a shelf.
But let’s honestly and truly look at mantic plastic chaos dwarfs and gw plastic chaos dwarfs. The games workshop quality is many magnitudes higher (regardless of artistic direction)
I’m glad! Means I can use them as handguns easier haha
I think that the fact that everyone on this site didn’t immediately all starting buying the mantic models is a good indicator of their quality. The initial excitement went away pretty quickly, they really don’t suit many of us. Hat’s off to them for trying to do their own thing, but it didn’t really work.
Big hats off? Haha
Yes mantic has been affordable and attainable but always underrepresented here. Which does say a lot.
I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the new range but we are a broad church at CDO and have always catered for many styles and tastes! (Even Mantic
)
Preference is always a personal thing.
I would rank the four different models ranges (3rd, 4th, FW, AoS) roughly equally in looks even though they are all so different in style. FW probably edges out just slightly into first place for me, and AoS is slightly behind the others so it is still fourth but I don’t think the models are hideous. I would put Mantic well below, and below most other manufacturer’s models available now too (but not all). My army will remain mostly as 4th edition models though, with 6th ed Dwarf conversions filling out the ranks for larger battles.
Yeah I’m not a fan of the Mantic ones, at all. A friend of mine tried telling me it’s great for value for money but for me a £1 a mini is not where I find value.
With the comparisons to the new stuff I very worriedly went to look at the Mantic stuff again just in case but as @Oxymandias has explained very well above they are a far far from them. When you look at the Mantic stuff all together you can barley see where one dwarf ends and another begins, very busy, too busy for me. Though peeps may not like the design it is at least crystal clear what they are trying to do.
Though if people are feeling about the new stuff the way I feel about Mantic, then I get the strong feelings.
@cornixt it’s great FW are top of the list for you, having not painted the new ones yet I can easily say the are may favourite to paint
Jesus Christ I haven’t seen mantic CDs in so so many years.
Fuck, they are much better than I remembered
I take back what I said. Those GW CDs are worse than mantic 2011
Wtf rly is happening behind gw ranks?!?
I wish I wouldn’t become a hater, but I don’t feel like this is something I took upon myself
I just wanted to enjoy CDs without my interests and beliefs being poked by corporations
I have noticed, as we age, the aesthetics of older minis we used to dislike become nostalgic and we are drawn to them. I feel that creeping up on me with classic 00s space marines, which I used to find dull.
It’s interesting to think that this range will some day be someone’s nostalgia.
The main issue I’m having with them, other than the gems, is the sheer size of the bastards.
@Oxymandias I think making your eventual project based quite tightly around the range will be sensible aesthetically for that reason.
I think you may be referring to whats nowadays known as having SOUL

And yes, old minis have plenty of it, I think its the fact that theyre traditionally sculpt and display plenty of imperfections and goofiness that somehow loops back to being awesome.
