The Possesions of Haz-Beerd the Majestic

“Dust, like smoke, rises from iron, wheels, shoes, shells, hobnails, boots, all turn to His purpose” mused Haz-Beerd as he surveyed the empty wastes before the train of warriors, slaves, and engines of war. It had been a long sevenday since they had broken with the road at Gal-Narry-But and headed out into the deep desert, already some of the slaves had begun to expire from thirst and heat, but Haz-Beerd was a true scion of the dark father and felt neither thirst or heat.

Have you decided what shields to use?

I have a bunch of these 5th edition dwarf shield bosses that will fit the bill, and some of the larger 4th edition round shields, but I’m in two minds about adding shields to this regiment, the additional +1 save vs shooting hardly seems worth the points or time taken to paint, also they don’t have shields on the box art so perhaps that’s how Michael envisioned them? Possibly I’ll keep the shields for a few characters and the bull centaurs.

I thought they came with the small dwarf shields? Maybe just the metal ones

I believe they came with the older shield sprue, the one that is half the small dwarf or goblin shield and half the larger human or orc shield. The studio army has one bright red regiment with the smaller shields, and one darker red regiment without shields, so I think either is fine.

Nope, I was wrong, no shields or transfers in the box, you were supposed to buy the blister packs for them if you needed them, the metal ones have the the shield mounting plug on their hands so presumably they had shields in the blisters.

The more I look at them the more I think shields would cover the magnificence of their beards, I’m going to leave the shields off, or glue them on the back of the characters that need them.

Shields on the back are great in my humble opinion !

Totally, I did some of my high elves that way after seeing the Jes Goodwin sketches of them and realising that’s where they were supposed to be all along. Secondly, after getting back into the square base game I realised how much time we spend looking at the backs of our armies, it’s worth doing something with that space because it increases your satisfaction with the final tabletop experience.

What some people did, back in the day, was to stick spare bases together side by side, the width of the unit, then build something like a shield rack, like a mini diorama.

So you could just stand it behind the unit to remind people they had shields that game etc

That’s a great idea, you could do it as a unit filler as well, but, sadly, it’s not Stillmania enough for this project, it would be breaking rules 6, 8, and 10, possibly 12 as well.

Originally, the plastics were ten in a box without shields. Somewhere around 5th edition they switched to 8 in a box with plain regular shields. No transfers/decals in either.

They were always a solid 20% too big to rank up properly on 20mm bases unless you turned them diagonal - this was the case for all of the monopose plastics from 4th edition.

Noble Cornixt, I defer to your wisdom on the matter of these ancient artefacts.

*I Haz-Beerd have caused to be manufactured a dozen of my newly improved automatic fire erupting axes, you are to select the best marksmen of my guard and instruct them in the use of these superior weapons, may the blessings of Hashut fall upon those who are obedient to my command. *

First I’ve heard of the stillmania rules. Had to Google that. That’s proper oldhammer stuff!

They are goodly rules from the noble forefathers, designed to prevent the sins of greed, poverty, sloth, and unsportsmanlike conduct that are all too common in our band of like minded souls, we would all have happier and more contented lives if only we could stick to them.

I’ve been thinking for a few years that this would be a fun exercise… but I get so few games in that it’s less fun to plan out. Can’t wait to see how this shapes up though!

I think if your collecting an army mostly for display then the stillmania thing would still be a useful tool, I like a project to be finished, and 2000 points is a good way to do that, but there are others, painting one of everything from a range is one method that I’ve always wanted to try, I’ve got a big orc army that is never going to finished way too big for anything practical but I just seem to aquire more green skins without trying, and that’s ok for some things as well, but I really do like to have the Finished Army feeling, so Stilmania for this project for me.

Noble cornitxt, I find than I am having trouble getting them to rank up even on 25mm bases.
