[TOW] Let's get competitive

This is something my group has to deal with and it is a reason most guys play MSU/MMU. Napoleonic style (lines of 7-10 models) 1 model deep.

Empire alpha strike supported with a tank, 3 cannons and hellblaster (I assume 1500 list would drop a unit of cav and a hellblaster). This is 1750 army BUT 1500 looks alike and 2000 just muiltipies the problem. Hellblaster and cannons are also not really bothered by ambushers - grapeshot, so ambushers are just to delay shooting that targets Your expensive units.

How would You guys approach this build? What tools we need to deal with 2+ armour and heavy shooting?

I see no answer to Cannons and demigyphs

I head that Lammasu Breath osnfine but not as good as dragon Breathā€¦ Do I have checked. Dragons have either S2 no Dave attacks or S4 AP1ā€¦ And Lammasu has S4 AP2. Which are also Magical!

Sneaky gits, teleporting behind their front line, flying into their artillery, flanking with wolf riders is how i deal with them

Where I see problems;

  1. He covers all the lengh of the board, flanking is hard,
  2. Sneaky Gits will Die to grape shots and shooting vs Cannons is no effective,
  3. Teleporting could work but again - nails and volley gun to the face and alsoā€¦
  4. Flying mage dies turn 1-2 to Cannonsā€¦

Well it has worked for me in all my games, if they would sit back and screwmen then would mean my artillery and guns would get more shots off without risk and ive ive never had my lamassu prophet die, even to cannon fire.
Otherwise deathshreakers or
Bolt throwers can take em out

Lammasuā€™s Beard and Ashen Banner are both good against shooting, plus Ash Storm once youā€™re close enough. Enemy cannot draw LOS over Elemental Spirit, and while itā€™s not as awesome as the Crystal Column, it can still take 1-2 war machines out of the game for that one critical turn. Take Curse of Hashut and go after those squishy T3 Engineers. Hellblaster is way less scary at BS3 and no re-rolls.
Plague of Rust takes that 2+ AS down to 4+, then hit it with our shooting. Or go Daemonic Familiar / Soul Eater in close combat. Iron Daemon will also take care of those AS2+ units (and be pretty hard to kill for them in return)

Or sure shooting means pressure and we have to push the board.

Bolt throwers are effective vs Cannons? 5+/4+ to hit/wound.

I plan to use Elemental Spirit spell. Blocking LoS is key. Unless I loose a mage turn 1. I wish there were some rules how to field terrain.

Ashen banner can help vs hellblaster buy not Cannons. I would but another 60 goblins instead lol or Sneaky Gits. Ward is a good idea from a banner too. Problem with Lammasuā€™ beard is they it requires BSB.

Curse of Hashut is a good idea.

Having several targets for enemy shooting is a good ideaā€¦ ID can hurt Steam tank tooā€¦on a charge. With Plague. But I would just Ignore it. It is słow.

There are
Yeah terrain can help. Forests completely block LOS for example. And unless your wizard is mounted on a monster but within 3" of a unit, heā€™s practically safe from cannons (cannonball has to directly hit the character, no bouncing. Thatā€™s a 1/6 chance.)

You can not choose 1st point before the Forest and just bounce though the forest into a character?

Hey im just telling you what has worked in my games and as of yet cannons have only been minor damage to my iron deamon. Either they sit back to screen from 60 points of sneaky gits or wolf cav which gives me the board and allows my guns and warmachines to demolish them. Or they move up and the 60 points take out 2+ warmachines.

It has worked in my games so you canā€™t say it doesnā€™t.

I did say it did not work??

Sneaky Gits can take shots instead of other high value targets. Still 360 LOS and grape shot not using BS is a good counter to low Ld ambushers. But this is a good trade.

RAW maybe, I donā€™t know. But i would consider it highly unsportsmanlike. Thereā€™s an indirect fire rule for a reason and cannons donā€™t have it.

That is the problem. Cannons do not target units as such. And I agree with our group that RAW is what it is what we should live with. You need LoS for 1st point to shoot a cannonā€¦ Your Cannon ball no longer even hit a hill if it bounces into one.

360 LOS change from previous editions makes IT very strong. You can even pivot on a hill and shoot being invisible in a previous round.

Not the kind of game I play, sorry. If thereā€™s a unit in front of the forest and you target that but the shot bounces through the forest and hits something behind it, fine. But ā€œtargetingā€ empty ground because you as the player know thereā€™s a unit behind the forest? Iā€™m not interested in that and will probably concede the game at that point.

It depends on how you look at it. Units, especially when we consider ā€˜skirmishā€™ nature of tOW, communicate. There are scouts etc.

Sadly designerā€™s intentions are unknown while rule is very clear. I would not call it gotch ya momentā€¦

Many this get FAQ in a future?

Iā€™m not arguing RAW here, not even RAI actually. Itā€™s how I view the game and what experience I want to have with it.

But thatā€™s always the key thing: Play the game with like-minded people who want to have a similar experience, nothing else matters. Itā€™s why I never played with some random opponent. This particular situation is so different from what I want to have out of the game, if itwould come up in a game with a stranger Iā€™d probably stop playing at that point. If it were a team event or some other circumstance where I feel I couldnā€™t just concede I might try to reach the compromise and handle it like it is done for characters within 3" of a unit and cannons: You have to cause a direct hit with the cannonball through the forest, not hit the model with the bounce. Again, this is not based on RAW and Iā€™m aware of it. But shooting a model which you donā€™t see through a forest and itā€™s exactly as likely as if it were on open ground? Nah, thatā€™s silly, I donā€™t want to play like that.

True, true. Shooting over Woods is a bit gamy. But this is a extreme example of good simplicity. This is not a Simulator. And a rather good set of rules taking all WFB editions into consideration.

There are better games that works great against a random opponent due to streamlined rulesā€¦

Nevertheless this is a topic about competitive list building so I assume we know that there are stronger builds people use. There is Ruby Ring everywhere or Cannon spam based on RAW. Lucky it is possible to Play a competitive gamę that is not a bad experience. I know guys who are pleasure to Play with and guys super tense and having problems controlling their emotions. In a competitive gamę or not. I am a seasoned wargamer. I Play mostly Mantic games as they lack problems we talk here but even from competitive point of view tOW feels rather balanced.

I was thinking some issues could be covered i. A tournament pack too like Square base show does or at least set some rules before the gamę starts.

The latest FAQs provide an answer for Volley Fire after using Travel Mystical Pathways:

Q: What constitutes a ā€˜moveā€™?
A: Quite simply, if you touch a model or unit and change its position in any way, it has moved. There are some exceptions to this, a war machine that pivots does not count as having moved, for example, but in the vast majority of cases, the term ā€˜moveā€™ follows the broadest definition; if a model or unit shifts its position or changes its location, it has moved.

So, no Volley Fire with Blunderbusses after the conveyance spell but -1 to hit because they have moved.

Question: If a Magma Cannon is moved using a Steam Carriage, and the rule states ā€œthese war machines are not considered to have moved this turn,ā€ does this mean I can cast ā€œTravel Mystical Pathwayā€ and still shoot with the Magma Cannon as it not ā€œmovedā€?
