BABIS:

very nice! have you considered to add some beaten signs on the drumskin?

BABIS
Thanks BABIS, yeah, I did paint a light "swirl" beaten pattern, just like they did in the classic Chaos Dwarf book

BABIS:

just a question mate ,

what do you use for bases? textures are made of green stuff? I’m very curious

I really like your bases, very appropriate to this army.

currently do you have some other wip?

Fuggit Khan:

I’m glad you like the bases…I wanted to go with a look of a bleak wasteland of scattered sharp shards of broken rock that is covered in ash. First I paint the base with GW Astrogranite texture paint, then I sprinkle it with Scenic Woodlands brand “lump coal” (which is often used in model train layouts)…here’s a picture of what the ‘lump coal’ looks like:

The coal sticks to the texture paint well, and then I paint over it in a dark Nato Euro Gray, then dry-brushed in 3 lighter shades of gray to get the ash look…after all, ash is pale gray, not black (charcoal is black, but not ash).

And yes, I currently have quite a few other works in progress cluttering up my model table…too many I’m afraid:
1) Repainting one of my Earthshaker Cannons
2) Hobgoblin Wolf Raiders conversions
3) Two CD heroes - with Big Hat conversions
4) BSB - who I think I will give a scratch built pistol
5) CD blunderbusses - all with new Big Hats
6) Sculpting a Banner of Eternal Flame
7) Hero with Naptha bomb
8) Magma Cannon conversions (I don’t like the FW model)
9) And 6 (!) WWI Albatros DV fighters (off topic, but WWI models are my other passion)

Thanks for the explanation ;) I will surely try the texture paint!
I thought you were creating some gs textures like on your destroyer base..

you have a lot of nice wips ;) I'm longing to see the heroes !
in your list there are some works I have already done , like scratch build pistol ( the "mini blunderbuss" gun of my champion ) the banner of eternal flame and the magma cannon ( I'm actually building another one ^^ )
the most important thing to keep in mind with the various conersions is to keep the vintage style which is so characteristic in a big hat army :hat off

You're welcome, and yes, you are right that on my larger bases (chariot size and up) I do use green stuff and FIMO clay to sculpt some rock textures along with the added texture paint.
If you or anybody else is interested, I thought I'd share a quick picture reference on making my bases:

For a quick and easy 'unit filler' here is a 40mm base that we add some green stuff and resin skulls

Next comes the texture paint sprinkled with 'lump coal'

Give it a quick paint of Euro Gray to seal it

Start dry brushing progressively lighter shades of gray to simulate ash and then base coat the skulls

And finally GW washes and dry brushing for the skulls...and instant 'unit filler' :hat off

BABIS
I fully agree with you, that's something that I really like about your army and the conversions that you've done...they keep the classic vintage look and feel.
I also try to keep the old school look with my conversions...such as these blunderbuss warriors of mine with some basic Big Hat conversions (I love to add horns to Big Hats). The guy on the left some of you may remember as an earlier conversion that I did because I thought a blunderbuss sniper would be wacky and fun, as at it turned out this guy gets the most attention of any of my models at tournaments...which may or may not be a good thing because he seems to get a lot of templates centered on him :)

Kera foehunter:

I lake the skull base your doing … I might just steal that idea… nice painting on the blunderbusses too the red amour look great

Abecedar:

a very nice and simple filler. I somehow never noticed the sniper before, really love the idea

BABIS:

fantastic bases at all. I love the textures of the final product ^^ btw, where did you buy the resin skulls? up to now I always used gw bits skulls, and this is very limiting because you never have enough of them ^^
I really love the horned bb  the super cool sniper is obviously the champion, right?

Fuggit Khan:

Thanks guys, and gals (Kera)…I’m glad you all like it.

btw, where did you buy the resin skulls?

BABIS
I buy my skulls on Ebay from seller caomao1122…here’s a link to the skulls:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40K-Resin-kit-human-skull-28mm-x-20-/251008722957?pt=Games_US&hash=item3a7149280d
They are excellent quality, you can buy as many as you want (20 skulls for only $1.50) and they ship fast (China to USA in about one week)…highly recommended to all :hat off

BABIS
Yep! He’s my champion! I like my heroes/champions to stand out from his mates, not just because it helps to add to the ‘theme’ of my army but more importantly I do it out of a sense of good sportsmanship…most WFB players are not familiar with Chaos Dwarfs and so I find that my opponents like to know “what is what” during a game. Unique characters in a unit helps people to know where the heroes are (without them having to ask a million times)…keeps the spirit of the game friendly I think

Fuggit Khan:

Work in progress of repainting my old Earthshaker Cannon. 20 years ago I had originally painted it almost entirely black with just a bit of red for some details…this time I’m going with a predominately red color scheme (much like how it was painted in the classic CD army book). Who knows, maybe in another 20 years I’ll repaint it all over again

Skink:

The chassis looks promising! I like the fact that despite the use of bright colours your models are still extremely detailed.

Kera foehunter:

wow !! i so love the red idea you have for the earthshaker

Fuggit Khan:

I started this blog off with some quick and easy ways to spruce up the Big Hats on some Blunderbuss warriors, thus giving each of them their own individual look. Well, plastic bits glued to Big Hats is fun, but lets move on to more fun, shall we? Custom Big Hats :hat off

I start by sawing plastic styrene tubes to various lengths (bigger is better…naturally)

This shows a rather simple ‘step by step’ of what I do. Gluing plastic card to the bottom of the tube, then I cut and shape it with an emeryboard to the size of the individual CD head…then the same step for the top of the Big Hat. Green stuff then gives the tall sloped look that I like. I do it this way because I like to have hard styrene plastic on the bottom and top of the hat, makes it way easier to glue it to the CD head as well as adding spiky bits to the top if you want

I make every Big Hat a bit different, after all, Chaos Dwarfs are full of pride and vanity, and every Chaos Dwarf flaunts his social status and wealth by his hat (or so I like to think). Adding resin skulls to the green stuff gives a unique look to this Big Hat that still keeps the classic look of the old vintage models

Bolg:

good work on the hat sculpts. and that classic paintjob on the earthshaker looks quite promising. i’ll keep an eye out for the next update.

BABIS:

oh my god O_O I’m longing to see those big hats fitted on your blunderbusses  don’t forget to add some chaos arrows ^^

Bolg
Thanks Bolg, it's funny how the older I get, the more that I like the classic paint schemes of bright colors ;)
...don't forget to add some chaos arrows ^^

BABIS
Chaos Arrows! Yes! No self respecting Chaos Dwarf would leave home without them...so on that note, more custom Big Hats (with chaos arrows) :hat off

Based on the stylized rune artwork (by Mark Gibbons) in the classic Chaos Dwarf army book, I wanted to make a Big Hat that had the same volcano rune look as pictured on the Death Rocket:

Which leads to this custom Big Hat:

I think it came out well...even though my wife says it looks like a cracked flower vase :)

Gunnerson:

Do you use a mold for your greenstuff?

Fuggit Khan:

Do you use a mold for your greenstuff?

Gunnerson
Nope, no molds...I do all my sculpting with one tool only: my pocket knife that my Dad gave to me when I was just a kid. I'm either too lazy, old fashioned or too cheap to buy any sculpting tools or molds :)

Fuggit Khan:

Well, last night I played a game at a friends house, and his cat named Tabs (who I call Mister Fluffy Paws) hung out on the table top watching everything. In turn 3 Mister Fluffy Paws (in an apparent bid to help his owner) batted my Iron Daemon right off the table. I guess the Iron Daemon has the soul of a cat as well because it landed on its ‘feet’, but two wheels popped off and the front axle was bent. Curse you Mister Fluffy Paws! Oh well…Iron Daemon now back in the shop and up on blocks :frowning:
I’ve decided to replace the axles with brass rod…at least it will be somewhat more cat proof. Oh, and no, the smoke stack did not break off…I just never glued it on to begin with. It was only after taking these pictures that I noticed I left an uncovered/unpainted hole on the side…
