Nicodemus:

Great Taurus (or the Corrupt-i-Bull)

I did a wet sand along the edge of the GS where his horns were extended. No matter how carefully I tried to smooth and blend it in while I was sculpting them there was still a very noticeable seam or line. I’m assuming others do this, but I thought I’d mention it as I didn’t know how well it would work - but a little water and 150-grit sand paper worked great.

That is seriously impressive,

maybe you should add some harness straps the the beast, cause the amour would fall off. Can’t wait to see more.

the unheard one
I hear you, unheard one. Good call. The photo is grainy as usual as I don’t have particularly good lighting around the crafts table. You’d think that would be something we’d fix… but we haven’t!

Note to mods and admins: Although the photo is not particularly sharp the bull’s genitals are visible, along with his overly gratuitous flaming balls. I’m happy to remove such references and images, as I believe this is treading that ‘fine line’.

Unit Fillers

In reference to this cannon, I must cite Beardroller, who in turn was inspired by Bassman’s Silvert Hat entry for Golden Hat X.

My plan is to use GS and sculpt a blast around the mouth of the cannon and then do the same about the expanding shot of souls at the end.

This wretched slave will be finished off with some GS to help depict his flesh being peeled back from his bones by the hopper.

Kered:

I love the cannon it’s like a mini hellcannon.

clam:

Very interesting Taurus Lord. It takes lots of skill to create such a beast :hat off

Only ‘little’ thing would be … wings - the look slightly to small - and would probably never carry such a bull - but who cares … ? - it’s fantasy

- looking forward seeing it painted.

And good work on the Blunderbuss/blunderbuss filler as well.

Keep’m comming

Loki:

Great work on the Taurus he looks very cool , also really like the cannon with the slave being pulled in to it and chopped up is anice touch

Nicodemus:

Thanks for all the comments and feedback everyone! I think this is now going to fully shift into an Army Blog thread instead of a conversion thread, so I hope it’ll be getting shuffled over to the appropriate spot soon.

I’m finally getting around to organizing a lot of my units. Being a cheapskate I’ve opted to use fillers in all of my units (i.e. Warriors and Blunderbuss/Annihilator units) - where the fillers will replace either 4 or 6 models. With ~200 Warriors and ~50 with Blunderbusses they spread out a lot further by adding unit fillers ;)   Also on the cheapskate side of things, I’m also making my own movement trays (of course they’re magnetized as well).

As some may or may not know I’m aiming for a 10K army of Chaos Dwarfs.  I have very few Hobgoblins, in general not enough to complete a unit so the army is going to be light of slaves.  I’m working on some rabble but the main unit I wanted to be front and centre isn’t available at the moment (sold out) so I’ve put slave stuff on the back burner for now.

Anyway, back to the progress of the last few days…

I’m of two minds about the use of lava effects for basing:

1. lava is way over-used for Chaos Dwarf armies (yes, I just used ‘way’ in that way)

2. lava effects look good. Damn good… and I’m going to do it too!

I’m not planning to put any lava effects on the base for my Greater Great Taurus (which makes the original one look like a wee baby)… but he’ll be one of the two without lava on his base. This Great Taurus, however, is still going in the army just the same.

This is also the first of two Lammasus… I went pretty vanilla with this model and the Great Taurus above because I wanted them to appear as ‘original’ as possible.  I want to do something a lot more special with the other Lammasu… but I don’t know what that’ll be yet!

Thanks for the King’s Wall piece Pyrostick… as you can see it’s been put to good use as part of the base for my Hell Cannon (which is the first of two also). Those black squares are flexible fridge magnet material that’s going to help secure the crew in place once everything is done.

After it looks like everything is going to fit it’s time for some rock.

I used one of the extra flails from the Flagellants and draped it over the chains… I figured the crew might want it to beat back some slaves every now and again for exercise. I also decided I wanted torches but they didn’t look right sticking straight out or even on an angle so I just made them slightly wonky and it seems like it works.

Blunderbuss unit

I left some space along the base of each model for lava to flow through. I would have preferred different rock, maybe something smaller and more like slate, but this is what I have so I’ll make it work.

I made some slight cuts and things like that to this movement tray just to change it up a little and give the lava somewhere to go.

This is what the lava flows will look like…

…oh, and there’s this:

Intended as a unit filler at present for a bunch of BFSP converted Blundrebuss units.

Nicodemus:

I’m still trying to stick with more of a steam punk kind of look/feel, and in general I want more machines in my army.

For those of you who remember from last year:

The body is still very rough and bumpy even though I smoothed out the casting material as much as I could and then covered it in 4-5 layers of Modge Podge.  I’ve since been trying to sand the body down better but it’s not getting the desired effect.

I’m still mulling over the giant slug creature and how exactly to continue with him…

…but then I saw this:

Sweet. Make the “beard” part a bit bigger and this could be the way to go!! I’m also considering using the front arms from a Chaos Defiler along with the Tyranid bits as legs in a bid to do a hybrid steam punk daemon-mecha.  The body plan also screams “Nurgle” so I was thinking for background and inspiration that I’d make the body more of a Nurgle feel and make it look like the Chaos Dwarfs captured this Beast of Nurgle and then twisted and modified it to meet their own ends ;)  Well, that’s what I’m thinking today anyway.

Here’s the other daemon-mecha monstrosities: An Inferno Golem, converted from a 40K Chaos Obliterator.  Obviously not done yet as he needs some shooty bits on his hands so that he can double as an Inferno Golem with an Eruption Gun as well as a Blunderbuss unit filler

Of course the guys that build all of these things for my army are some specialized guys from the Guild of Arcane Engineers (which is what I decided to call them)… and they need cool things to get around on like the mechanized unit filler WIP pics from a few weeks ago (which was basically just a defiler body and legs)…

… or things like a stolen Disc of Tzeentch that’s been modified using some good old Dawi Zharr ingenuity  :hat off

The Arcane Engineer/Daemonsmith rider isn’t the final one that I’m going to use. I think this guy is going to end up back inside the Nurgle daemon-mecha where he won’t be as fully visible. I want to try my hand at re-making a couple more of these again from the BFSP slayer models as I currently need a total of 3 Arcane Engineers to pilot things…

Oh, and that’s not the base that this is going to go on, I just needed something to prop it up until the glue was dry underneath. It’s going to go on a 40mm base as a flying unit and then subbed in to one of my groups of Blunderbusses as a unit filler.

If anyone has some great thoughts on how to make some of these better, particularly the Nurgle daemon-mecha let me know… I’d like to finish him but he’s feeling stalled indefinitely. I may just need to remake the whole body from the beginning.

Kered:

The disc is looking awesome can’t wait to see it and all the other conversions finished.

Loki:

Great work on every thing some amazing conversions that you have been working on, like the conversion work that you have done on the kings wall great way of making it a cd wall

The Stormchild:

Very impressive!

I would love to see this army when completed!

tjub:

Hehe, there are some crasy conversion work in here. Im really curious on the disc thing!

Ronshank:

What can I say that heavy artillery is awesome. The Earthshakers are just as I imagine them. Which leads me to my burning question, how do you cast the greenstuff re-cast things? Especially for substantial things like the goblins? (way eairlier in the blog). I’ve been having real dramas trying to do this myself and you seem to know the secret.

RoguePanda:

Truly awe inspiring stuff, my favourite has to be the inferno-golem from the obliterator! Actually… that gives me an idea… what about a Chaos Dwarf elite unit with a similar sort of “magical infection” to the obliterator virus…

Seriously, I am in awe of the stuff you’ve been working on here! Can’t wait to see more

I'm not nearly as good as that series of pictures you're referring to has lead you to believe.  In that case it's a Goblin from the board game HeroQuest and they were green plastic, essentially the same colour of green as "cured" GS.  So I don't really know any secrets. The furthest I've gotten with 'casting' using GS is to stick a blob of GS into the bottom of a square base (which acted as the frame of the 1-part mould) then pressed the face of an Orc skull into it. The Orc skull and the GS had lots of water on them (I hear olive oil works much better), then I pulled the skull out after a few seconds and by the next day I was able to press more wet GS into the dried mould and get a copy of the face of the skull. Never ended up using it though (yet).

RoguePanda
That would be expen$ive, but I really like that idea! :cheers  You could probably make something like Chaos Dwarfs riding around inside daemon-mecha ;)  Just convert the front of the Obliterator model so that it looks more like a cockpit and put a Dwarf torso & head in there.  You'd probably still have to cut the back of the head and the torso off so that it's just the front-most part showing, but it has potential!  They'd make some crazy Immortals, although the base size would be an issue ;) :P

What to do, what to do?  Here's the start of my horribly unfinished army.

9 units of 20 Warriors (each with w/ Full Command and unit filler)

If (and when) I do a 10th unit of Warriors it's going to be special. I already know what it's going to be, but I have no idea how I'm going to pull it off or what it'll look like when it's done... but in my hazy imagination I can almost see it... and it has epic theme, is totally Dawi Zharr, and will probably be front and centre of my army along with my Great Taurus.

First 4 units of 18 Blunderbuss (each with w/ Full Command and unit filler)

There's also 2 Great Taurus each with Lord, 2 Lammasu each with Sorcerer if needed, and there will be 2 Hell Cannons. The second one will be here within the week.

As for the rest of the army, here's the plan based on what I have (counting 4th-7th ED stuff):
10 Bull Centaurs (only assembled 4 so far, although I've got 11 I'll only group them in 5s)
9 Death Rockets (only two assembled so far)
3 Earth Shakers (none assembled)
2 units of 12 Hobgoblin Warriors each w/ Full Command (I'd prefer a larger number but this is all I have to work with for now)
1 unit of 18 Hobgoblin Archers
1 unit of 18 Sneaky Gitz
1 Hobgoblin Bolt Thrower
5 Hobgoblin Wolfriders (one of which is the Hobgoblin Hero)

1 Astragoth (actually I have 2, but he's unique so I can't count him twice)
4 Sorcerers
3 Heroes

From the Indy GT list I also have:
1 Morgok Hellspawn
1 Daemonsmith (although I could probably sub in my 3 Arcane Engineers as extra Daemonsmiths, but they're going to be permanent fixtures of unit fillers soon)
1 unit 20 Rabble (I can probably do a lot more than this if I mix and match Flagellants with converted ghouls, Skaven and some other units like Snotlings. I've got heaps of extra Snotlings from Warhammer Quest)

I hasten to add that none of the above is counting my unit fillers, which in many cases could count as things like an Eruption Gun, Inferno Golem, Earth Shaker, etc.

I've also got 5 Dwarf Iron Breakers coming that'll form part of my Immortals, the other 5 are going to be conversions and I think the process for designing and making them have been finalized (just not shared yet)... more to come on that much later.

I'm also in need of a couple of more unit fillers for my Warrior units. I need 3 more ideas. Zhatan the Black would be good as a unit filler, or a character similar to him... I have to admit I have a hard time finding good models with hands in positions that can be make to look like they are supporting something like a palanquin. I could sculpt them from GS but with my abilities that sounds painful.  I also really want to make a second Dwai-Zharr converted Disc of Tzeentch, but I'll hold off for now as I don't want it to look too samey with the other one nearly finished.

After all that I think that's it for now... although I'm still waiting on some bits and pieces, such as a couple of more Blunderbuss models and bitz to finish off a lot of the conversions.

Anonymouse:

You, Sir, are a sick sick man. Just the way we like it.

And I hope you’d care to share how the hell you made that unit filler: it’s awesome

Alfract:

Loving your work so far, your really asseembling a host to be reckoned with. can’t wait to see more

Zanko:

Hey dude this a  real amazing collection of Chaos Dwarfs! :hat off

You have assembled some great and unique models there - especially the Great Taurus!

Now you “only” have to paint them!

                      :hashut

warh:

that is one big army!

good luck with painting them

Nicodemus:

Nicodemus [quote=RoguePanda
To be far... after doing some searching I've discovered that my ideas are not unique and have been pursued before (and done much better!). Although I don't see any Obliterators in there...

I'd actually never seen that thread before I don't think.. or if I did I don't remember it at all. But you know what they say about "great minds"... and a good idea is a good idea so it was bound to be duplicated.

Personally I think this one is just sick... totally stellar conversion and I love the legs.

I also found this link to an eBay auction, and although I don't care for the conversion and it's not CD-related, it's basically what I did. So much for originality ;)

Kered:

Nice find that very similar to what I’m going to do for my inferno golem/unit filler.

Nicodemus:

I have very few Hobgoblins, in general not enough to complete a unit so the army is going to be light of slaves.  I'm working on some rabble but the main unit I wanted to be front and centre isn't available at the moment (sold out) so I've put slave stuff on the back burner for now.

NIcodemus
It's sad that my Chaos Dwarfs outnumber their slaves probably 10-to-1, and it should be the other way around.  To rectify this I've just gotten my hands on the Orc-Slave I was after... Dirk just re-posted some to eBay:

This guy is going into a unit of Rabble as a unit filler. I'll probably mount him on a 25mm base and then try to blend that base in with its surroundings on a 40mm base for the filler.  ... the shield says it all

The model is from the guy who made the "Black Dwarf" sculpts for the Border Town Burning Mordheim supplement... his blog can be found here:
