[Archive] Nicodemus' Forge of Unfinished Business [May 19 2019]

Blackheart:

NIcodemus you got great conversion ideas! I love the grinding wheel on the unit filler for the blunderbusses. So when will we see your whole army painted and ready to go?

Loki:

Great great army that you have there mate so many lovely big hats, keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing them painted

Da Crusha:

really cool looking conversions you got here, I really like the warmachine with the souls shooting out, very cool. your inferno golems are looking the way I planned on making mine. I already have 3 ork nobz in mega armour that Ive been working on. good idea to go with the obliterator, I had always considered the obliterator to be a good inferno golem but I decided to go with mega armour instead.

cant wait to see some paint on your models!

Nicodemus:

I know… I know… I need to get a move on with the painting :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s just my way. I prefer to stick with one type of job until everything (or at least almost everything) is ready to be moved on to the next stage…

Let’s just say I’m working on getting to the painting stage.

Further to the 10th unit of Warriors I eluded to in an earlier post (as well as looking for suggestions for Dwarf slave models), here’s the lo-down:

I’m working on a 10K pt army. So far I have 9 units of Warriors (20 in each) to go in it. For my 10th unit I wanted something a little more over the top than my other units, where are comprised of 16 Warriors with a 4 model unit filler - and they all have full command.  Here’s a typical example (sorry, movement trays haven’t been cleaned up and better disguised yet, etc etc).

My units all have a specific theme and story behind them - so for example the Dawi Zharr-converted stolen Disc of Tzeentch with the Chaos Dwarf rider belongs in the unit of Warriors who represent the Zharr Grungron Ankor Arcane Engineer’s Guild - Zharr Grungron Ankor is my own created settlement deep below the lowest levels of the ruins of the Dwarf Underway and is featured in the Warhammer Quest expansion, but I digress.

I’m also awaiting this model - the Black Dwarf Sorcerer who will be carried on a palanquin as one of the final Warrior unit fillers.

So, without further ado, for my 10th unit of Warriors I give you…

The forging of Goldgreed’s Ensorcelled Dawi Slave Force, led by none other than Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed himself!!  (There’s a whole back story to him that I’ll omit for the sake of everyone else  )

As you can see I went with Slayers as the Dwarf slaves. These Dwarfs will ‘count as’ Chaos Dwarfs because they’re ensorcelled/possessed/controlled, or what have you.  … which is a nice twist on the usual thing I see others talking about being forced to count their CD army as a Dwarf army ;)  x.x

Anyway, here’s the actual progress from the last few nights:

In this case there’s going to be the 4-model unit filler as well as one other 2-model unit filler which will be a Dwarf pulling a treasure chest behind him.

Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed is actually a Sorcerer and High Priest of Hashut and without getting into too much of his back story he also indirectly controls the Slave Guild and through mastery of Hashut’s Dark Gift of magic he has taken control of some of the toughest Dawi slaves that could not otherwise be broken and bent to the will of the Dawi Zharr. He uses them in his mines - which are very prosperous - making Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed the most wealthy Dawi Zharr in the Empire.

Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed will be atop the unit filler, which is a converted BFSP cart which is going to be filled with gold coins (the coins are simple enough to crank out, but getting enough of them is taking a long time, let me tell you!!).  I haven’t decided if the two Dawi bearing him atop the cart of Gold and riches will be Dawi Zharr or normal Dawi… but I’m leaning more toward Dawi Zharr, in which case Goldgreed as well as these two guys will be getting some GS slapped on them to finish the conversion.

Ultimately the coins will be filling the cart and they’ll also be scattered around the bases of the models.  The Dawi slaves are also going to be wearing the usual rings still and will still have expensive-looking weapons so my plan is to go with a gold and silver/mithril theme for the colours.

The last idea I had for adding some bling to the unit is to smooth out the movement tray with plasticard so it looks seamless (or as seamless as possible) and make the movement tray and all of the individual bases to look like the unit is walking on a roadway paved with gold and brass.

Still horribly incomplete and totally distracting me from working on blunderbuss models… but it’s underway (as opposed to The Dawi Underway).

Alfract:

everyday there is a new addition, LOVE IT, i hope that one one my blog can be as productive as yours.

Nicodemus:

Small update from tonight’s progress…

Here’s the extra unit filler for the unit of Warriors, he’s the same model as the ones that are pulling the cart. In this case this guy is going to be dragging the chest behind him.

I’m really not happy with the Slayer musician. He’s going to be awful to convert and I just don’t like him as-is.  Here’s the model:

I also got a start on the top of the cart, filling in the coins. I’m going to save myself some time piling up coins by putting in some risers. The main one is in place (~2 mm thick cardstock), and is partially surrounded by coins.  I also pinned the models for the top as they’re really going to make this thing top heavy, although the base is 40 mm and will be magnetized I still want it secure.

I’m also going to make a coin pouch from GS for his hand… ultimately I’m really hoping the pose is going to make him look his he’s greedily pulling his bag of gold away and preparing to strike back with his axe :cheers  I still can’t decide, however, what to do with those wings.  I could just paint them to look gold or metallic, or I was thinking GS bat wings, but the bat idea doesn’t seem to fit… so I’ve left them for now and I think I just need to ponder a good paint scheme.

As a good Dawi Zharr I just had to deface the ornate bits on the shield. My plan is to replace it with a mark of Hashut (using GS).  I’m also thinking about leaving the short pins in both feet of Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed unglued so that I can make him his own separate 20 mm base for special occasions where I want to transfer him and use him as a character :hat

I’ve been eating up the stuff Teb and Marcus have been doing over the past few years, in particular the feel of some of Teb’s artwork, such as this:

I decided to use it as inspiration to continue converting the Grudge Pony’s cart into Goldgreed’s cart of riches

After that bit of fun the other models decided to just play a little frisbee :hat off   :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Nicodemus:

More on the 10th unit of Warriors

Dawi slaves pulling Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed’s cart o’ riches along the road of gold and brass.

I also had to do a few tiny bits of GS for linking the chains to things. It helps to have a spare cylinder of cured GS lying around.  Suppose I could have used it for coins but I find that the rolled GS is never circular enough and more oval-shaped.

More coins being piled up in the cart. The spaces that I want to leave gaps for the feet of the models on top are indicated.

This is the other unit filler, same model as the ones pulling the cart. Now that I’m looking at him I think I want him pulling something larger, like maybe a smaller version of the big cart… hmmm.

Here’s how the top of the cart is shaping up when the models are placed back on top. … more gold… more gold!!

I was also thinking that if I do ever make another unit of Warriors I want an undead unit led by a Chaos Dwarf Necromancer as the unit filler… it at least something that approximates a Necromancer.

Looking to do it on the cheap after buying all of those slayers for Goldgreed’s unit I looked to my big collection of HeroQuest minis - particularly the Zombie and Skeletons.  This was just a check on proof-of-concept using one of the Zombies…

Obviously the axe doesn’t fit and needs to be much bigger to count as a CD Warrior.  He’s also still a bit tall, compared to other CD models, but the possibility is there :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Vexxus:

NIcodemus
Heroquest Zombies! Love it.

Nicodemus:

Was planning to save these but what the heck… Once I get the GS on this unit it could be a while before I do any more updates.

Finally everything is ready for some Green stuff:

I’m glad I didn’t get distracted and move on to something else. I forced myself to come up with something for the standard bearer, initially I was thinking to just go with the idea that Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed is rich and have dangling coins and some other stuff, but that sounded crappy and I just couldn’t fully imagine it in my head. I went with the other major aspect of Goldgreed - that he’s been charged with constructing a massive Dawi Zharr Underway connecting Zharr Naggrund with a new Chaos Dwarf settlement deep below the ruins of the ancient Dawi Underway, beyond the World’s Edge Mountains. The cart is still going to be filled with gold, but it’s a cart used in the mines, used for constructing the Underway.

Here’s views of the models:

I figured with all of the gold spilling over from the Greed Cart that it would be prudent for a slave to have some means of quickly cleaning up… which was more of a round-about way of figuring out what to do with this model which had a pose I linked. I give you: The Dawi Zharr Dredger

I’m now thinking that a Dungeon Dredger or maybe a Battlefield Dredger that sucks in corpses and feeds them into a modified Hellcannon or something would be fun but I don’t have any immediate plans to make one :stuck_out_tongue:

Kered:

I glad to see the concept come together so well.

tjub:

Wow, this is a really cool unit. Looking forward to see the finished result!

bas_2312:

Holy crap these conversions are awesome! Can’t wait to see the painted unit!

Blackheart:

My big hat goes off to you! That unit is brilliant, I love your conversions they show alot of creativity. The gold-vacuum cleaner is hilarious!

Loki:

Awesome work, that unit looks amazing canit wait to see it painted up, please dont keep us waiting long

dncswlf:

WOW! Can’t wait to see that painted up!! awesome work!

kerbak:

Dude your work is very very cool, you have inspired me for many conversions,I like what you donde twith the heroquest dwarf, I had it inside a unit, but I think will be much better if amde a conversion as you do,

also I want to know if you ever keep working on the wheel machine (below), i think its sucha great machine that i really want to see how ended it

Nicodemus:

Yes, I'm still working on the Dungeon Grinder. :hat off
It's going very slow as I'm still awaiting more inspiration on some parts of it... although I think I've got some radical ideas for how ot continue with it just since the weekend.  I also got a couple of these Orc rollers along with a few other bits to add, but so far there's little else to report.

It's sitting on my conversion table and has seen some work in the past week.  Not a lot to report. I basically glued and tied down a narrow sheet of plasticard around the outside of the central body to hide the seam.

I'm thinking about replacing the outside wheels as they're cut very roughly and are looking like they'll be hard to clean up.. although I could put GS on and use the unevenness of it to sculpt a Daemonic Warmachine and count it is as a Kolossus Daemon Tower...

Right now a lot of ideas but nothing really concrete.  Once I get more inspiration it'll be like the Great Taurus and the 10th unit of Warriors... full steam ahead ;)

Instead of posting again I'm just going to update my last reply...

Further on my HeroQuest fig conversion of Undead -> Dwarf-scale Undead (possibly for a unit of Undead Chaos Dwarf Warriors)

HeroQuest Skeleton Conversion(I have buckets of these guys... easily 60+).

There's room for improvement here in the conversion, such as the upper arms. Given what it is, however, all in all I think it works and would probably do just fine as a unit. It would be no better or worse model-wise as the plastic Chaos Dwarf Warriors when they are all ranked up.... they both just need to be a smidge shorter.

Comparison with originals.

From Slayers to Slaves...  Imperious Gharzakh Goldgreed's Unit finished

I was uninspired with the Slayer musician... which lead to a somewhat uninspired version of him as a slave musician.  I'll do my best not to let the paint scheme suck and maybe I can pull it out of the fire.

I also did some chains and things here and there with GS... I figured as slaves, even though they're controlled by Gharzakh's sorcerery, that at least some of them should have chains on them.  The standard bearer in particular.

The Gold Dredger

A random model... with a bag of gold.

I also made the base and unit tray interleaved to some extent to help convey the plates of gold and brass later on once it's painted.

I'm also surprised how well the shorn Slayer heads turned out ;)  I don't know if it's a faux pas to hack away at pricier figs, so maybe there are some members of the Slayer Brotherhood out there who are enraged looking at this... :hat off   Long Live Hashut!! :hashut  :cheers

The shield bearers were only very minimally converted as I liked them as they were and there really wasn't a lot to do with them away.  I thought this guy's beard needed some filling out with extra curls though...  Oh, and I filed down almost all of the Dawi runes and iconography. For example the model on the right had runes on his helm. They're totally gone.  He might get a Rune of Hashut painted on instead though.

I also put a Rune of Hashut on the shield, but had to place it off-centre so that it could be mostly seen when Goldgreed is up there.

He's not glued on, there's just pins in each foot as well as a rare earth magnet fixed in the main body. There's a matched rare earth magnet on the bottom of the shield and even with the space between them there's enough attraction to hold him in place when bumped and being moved.

Since he was removable I decided I wanted to be able to use him as a stand-alone character so I drilled a separate 20mm base and magnetized it as well.

I'm feeling like I may need to break my own rules a bit and paint this up before I finish preparing the rest of the army :o   If I do this... at least some of the colour choices I make can then be propagated to all of the other units when they're being painted to help make the army more cohesive, colour palette-wise.

It's also apparent to me that I need some help with my army list, mostly just suggestions for good choices and magic items, etc... as well as checking to make sure I haven't done anything illegal.

That Mage further up this page. What company is he from?

Uzkul Werit
He's from DO ODD Miniatures <- Blog link.

The model is sold only through Dirk's eBay shop, you can also find the model by searching eBay for "Blackdwarf, chaosdwarf Feuerzauberer". Note that the seller is in Germany so you may need to filter your search results for "Worldwide".

I'll post pictures of the sorcerer as well as the Orc once I get them.
