Daemon_Smith:

Wow I love your work, Nicodemus! Very inspiring indeed! I really love the inslaved Dawi! Very pretty…

Where do you get your insperation for conversions?

Honestly, I think it's a combination of seeing other people's work and then having one or two ideas of my own that I think about for a long time.

For the Great Taurus I basically had it in my head for ~3 months that I was going to use that Reaper mini for something and I knew I wanted a very large bull to do a Great Taurus conversion. After I had the thought in my head I just kept picturing all the possible permutations until I had a sense of the basic shape and concept, then just got the models and tried going through my bitz box to see what things would work and what wouldn't.

This was the same idea for the Gold Dredger model I made, based on one of the crew from the Goblin Hewer. I really liked the pose of the model and knew he'd be good for something. After about a week or more of thinking about what to do I finally got the idea of a vacuum for cleaning up gold ;) After that I just kept cutting bits of plasticard until I had a basic shape I liked.

That's basically how most of it goes. I have ideas rattle around in my head for a long time and I keep refining them until I feel like I have a good mental picture of what I want to do.... but I'm not under any delusions that my stuff is great. I think it's about average, I'm just happy if I do one or two things that are novel or haven't been done before ;P

Nicodemus:

Quick update… Dirk’s Black Dwarf models arrived, including the Black Dwarf Sorcerer, which I’m using in a unit filler.  The idea is that he’s on a palanquin carried by two Dawi Zharr.

When will you show us previous unit painted, the idea is absolutely marvelous.

No idea. I'm enjoying all the conversions right now and getting organized.  I generally like to do only one thing at a time, which means I'll want to be done with setting up all of my units, etc. before painting. I also haven't decided fully on a "look" yet, so I want to cement the idea in my own mind for how the bases will look and what colour scheme, etc I'll use.  If the brass etching I'm setting up works as well as it should I'll also be incorporating lots of extra brass bits into the existing units before painting ;)

Here's the concept for the 4-model unit filler for my unit of 30 (6x5) Black Orcs:

Haven't totally decided on how the base/palanquin will be mounted to the Doombull, but I'm thinking of pieces that might look like shock absorbers so that it cushions the Dawi Zharr rider while the "mount" is thrashing around killing stuff on the battle field ;)

... of course the Black Orcs are going to get a bit of treatment as well - removing all of the Orc iconography and symbols as it's inappropriate in a Chaos Dwarf army :hat off The Orcs are also going to have more vestiges of their history of slavery, so more chains, branding, etc. :hashut

Loki:

Great work on the uint filers, and i also like the concept for the black orc unit as well

Gar Shadowfame:

how about “master-blaster” style seat (Its from mad max 3).

Yes, that's where the idea came from!  Great movie, BTW!

I was thinking I didn't want someone strapped too close to the Doombull, partly due to his awkward stance which would require the rider to be at an odd angle as well.  I haven't totally settled on using the Chaos Dwarf Hero model shown in the silhouette above.  Maybe I can convert up someone with a bit more of a dynamic posture to go on there... but I'm not sure what that'll be.

My initial thought of using the CD Hero as suggested in the image above was from the Indy GT image of Zhatan the Black, which used the same model, and I was thinking this would be his Doombull bearer as opposed to the four Hobgoblin ones... and I was still planning to have a Snotling slave kicking around on that model too just in keeping with the Indy fluff ;)

Need to get those blunderbusses finished first... won't be tonight though, the Star Wars symphony is on tonight :cheers

Saw him in the showcase on here ages ago but didn't know where he was from.  Great piece.

Here's the makings of the unit of Black Orcs... so far the palanquin is just propped up on top of a tube for height (sorry for the poor quality/detail).

I'm glad I've got some plastic Black Orcs there to help with the weight. The Doombull and 14 metal Black Orcs is making it weighty enough as it is.

Shakhorth:

Now that unit feels like an angry mob. Wouldn’t like them to charge my lines. Nice work Nicodemus, it just looks awesome. Can’t wait to see it the finished product.

Spent some time working on my unit of 30 Black Orcs.. with the Doombull "mount" unit filler. Although it was easy shaving the Orc symbols off the plastic models it took considerably longer to get the metal ones done. Next ones will be plastic ;) I haven't put on their branding yet, or the extra chains, etc, but I felt like they needed a few more "slave" bits, so I just did two for the front rank:

As for the Doombull, here's where he's at:

The brass rods are bent at the ends and then go into the main body in order to give the necessary support for the rider.

With some careful aligning and glueing I was able to get the plastic rods setup so that I can remove the palanquin (which is magnetized) and the magnetized rider can also be removed if necessary. My long-term plan is to trade-up the Chaos Dwarf rider for a Marauder Mage... yeah... I'm holding my breath for one x.x  Anyway, the palanquin needs a lot more work.

Riding atop a Doombull makes for an excellent vantage point to look out over the rest of the army ;)

In my first ever WFB game today my unit of 30 Black Orcs (above) held their own today against a War Hydra and two chariots at the same time... lasted from round 2 right to the end of round 6 before finally getting mowed down ;P

Here's my "State of the army" address, in pictures:

Dhark:

Great Work! You really can be proud on such a huge CD-Army. But I guess it is time for you to do some paint-jobs. This great army needs some paint to be the perfect whoreship to Hashut! :hat

Bassman:

Wow! Great collection and great imagination. I appreciate your efforts.

Check your table, I’m pretty sure it is going to crumble under all that metal!!!

As Dhark said, slap some paint on them!

Shakhorth:

That’s an impressive army you got there. My hat off to you sir :hat off . Although I agree some paint would make Hashut proud, I too suffer from the collecting/sculpting bug. Seems the pile of miniatures I have to paint is never ending.

Let’s call it a pension plan.

Nazhur:

Wonderful army. Brings a small tear to my eye to see so many chaos dwarfs big hats on a table  Now just waiting form some colour

Obsidian:

Lot’s of models, I especially wonder what this is?

Dhark:

@Obsidian
Look at Post #66 of this Thread. There you see how he created his Taurus

Obsidian:

Thanks for the link, how did you know I am too lazy to look things up hahaha! :cheers
