[Archive] Thorne's return NO HATS!

Thorne:

Amazing size - especially for the time in which you made them! :cheers

Zanko
Haha thank you but sadly I must admit I have been slacking of late, Sadly old freinds of mine have returned ot world of warcraft and I joined them to add to the number of those that are currently leveling. This left me with a bunch of old guys pretty much like myself who seam to do nothing but chat for an hour while we wait for everyone to get on. Now thats not really a problem but then we spend half hour playing and then we all log off and go to bed to rest up before children and work come back to us :P So I am slacking really. I have completed entire 3000 point armies over the space of the weekend before children and jobs and the wifes diy demmands :P
I like the quite unique paint scheme of your Hobbos and I love the old Grenadier models you use for them! I used parts of them too for my army! ;)

Zanko
Well Ive seen them painted in all colours and all different styles badly and well and I wanted a scheme of colours that would look great with the force I had, Dirty yellows and purples worked very well and became very quick to paint so i was pleased with the result personaly and it bulks the size of my force up considerably allowing for handy cannon fodder and march blocking fast cavalry.
Two questions: 1. Are the minis so glossy or is it a because of the flashlight?
                     2. Will you change the bases?

Zanko
1, Well in reality they are not so glossy as they photograph. Photography apparently reveals all the sins of the models but it appears that my camera also makes my models look much too glossy than they are. Problem being is I can only photograph my models in the garage as my wife disallows the models in the house and sadly for all my sneekery she finds them :( but all in all using one fo the few games workshop products I like the purity seal si a good one. Sadly it seams that the models I seal look glossy. Ill have to photograp them when I get to my gaming club next that have no idea I have evil dwarves lurking in the background.

2, The bases I will be manipulating somewhat. The bolthrowers the hobgoblin archers the hobgoblin wolf riders will be deffinately getting a slop of all purpose filler and covering over with grey ballast then I will more than likely black ink the topmaking them all have a blackish ballast base so I can use them as a small stand alone force if needed and as works in the fluff for my force they are hobgoblin mercenaries hence better than average equiptment ect ect. The chaos dwarves have allready had the all purpose filler jobs done to their bases, All that I want to do wiht those is scrape some of the filler out and then apply blazing orange and appropriate yellow to give them a lava effect later if all works out.

Thanks Zanko for your kind words does anyone else have any other pointers ?

Thorne:

Here I must admit I seam to be loosing the will to get more of these style little fellows out fo the boxes and slap greenstuff on them, Yep its come ot this shall I consign the whole army to a box and start again, I must admit they have come up pretty fast but have I brunt myself out in the process, Im not a wonderfull painter and by that token Im relaly not a great modeler like some of you guys here that seam to take greenstuff and make your own and of late im loosing the big hat fait looking at many other model son the site thinking I should have done something like that, But by the same token the army itself is near up to where Id like it to be size wise but that still doesnt mean I want to keep going with it, For the love of Hashut the chaos dwarves turn heads when I play with them and people dont expect to see one chaos dwarf amrm let alone a second.

Which brings me to a point. Shall I make another chaos dwarf force without the pushpins and with a little less space age gajetry that these guys seam to have in a abbundance ? Frankly I have another 2 blunderbuss regimments that I need to make and paint up. But looking at my models they look a mess not polished and not with lack of trying Ive used lots of miliput on them and I now see what the difference is from my modeling a few months back to where it is now just changing what I use. So expect to see another blog later in thsi forum using cheaper gamesworkshop figures as is my trademark of late than old school gamesworkshop models but wiht that semi 1980’s look to them .

After Hat and mask now im going back to basics and doing real style none big hat chaos dwarves Kislev can wait

Thorne
Hmmm I think we have similar problems! :(

My wife only allows me to arrange some of my highlights in our dwelling! :mad

I cannot understand why many women don't like such nice miniatures! ;)

dncswlf:

phierlihy:

I’m not an expert on the old rules but you’ve got 5 characters there.

Other than that, your list doesn’t look like your opponent will want to play you twice.

Hero's you mean the standard bearer and the hero with the brand or do you mean my sorcerer and the female warrior in heavy armour too ?

Loki:

Great work Thorne really like the bull taurus, keep the great stuff coming

Thorne:

The host thus far

Border Reiver:

Just thinking out loud, but I think you might need a few more core units, not criticizing or anything, just pointing out what you already know - because I can.

I like the directional lighting on your first priest, nicely done.

The greenish colour on the front of the lammasu rider - not so much. Without an obvious source (and no green on the lammasu) it just looks like an accident with the paint pot occurred.

Thorne

Thorne:

D&D Dungeons of Dread #33 Dwarf Shieldmaiden

Duergar Slaver Unhallowed 38/60

the sorcerer is a lil different as hes mostly sculpted myself but the base was a dwarf bolthrower crewman

Zanko:

I like the new guys very much - they are (imo) even better than your BigHats! :cheers

I must agree with BR - the green front of the Lammasu-rider is not the best option …

Nonetheless cool stuff! I’m eager to see more stuff! :hat off

                     :hashut

Thorne:

Thanks for the Vote of confidence Zanko I sort of knew that you would like these guys before I had uploaded the pictures there is something to be said for the old way of doing things.

I must with BR the green front of the Lammasu-rider is not the best option …

Zanko
I must admit in the cold light (and real light too) that the glowy almost wigth blade effect didnt turn out too well, I was hoping for a greenish tint to the model comming from the blade but alas it didnt work out so well as I would have liked, The ligthing effect from the preist looked remarkably good all things considered so shall I apply the same theory and practice that I have upon my preist onto the lord on Lamassu looking model ? Im sure with a little work I may be abel to do it. BR What do you think ?

And what the hell was I thinking basing the old gobo’s with bright green paint and sand, Just shows how after painting nearly 300 of these in the past that its become some what art on how to paint so many so fast and exactly the same.

Thorne
Well I would drop the lamasu, I dont think it very good in the RH list.
love the 30 hobgob archers but I would put them in 3 units.
and I would drop one of the death rockets for 2 boltthrowers.

Thorne:

Bolg thats just phase one of the army, Bolt throwers will follow in later phases of the army.

Thorne:

My very first ever green ! I am so pleased with myself !

Inked it brown for a little deffanition but I like it lots
