My Golden Hat XXXVIII entry
Would you like to know more?
For my first Golden Hat XXXVIII entry I painted “Iron Steve” from the Greebo Dwarvageddoom campaign.
I have focussed on painting quantity for quite a while now, and while I am perfectly fine with my tabletop standard and newly used battle-ready standard, it has been a long time since I took my time with a single model - and I have neglected training that particular muscle far too long!
Since this was a Golden Hat, I really wanted to leave my comfort zone with this model. And that meant three m…

Chaos Dwarf Big Hat Heroes painted battle-ready+
I followed the same recipe I used for the troops and war machines, but did spend just a little more time on a first layer of highlights, mainly on the skin, the red highlight colour and the Sorcerer’s cloak. They are still far from done, but just that tad closer to tabletop standard to maybe stand out a little from the basic troops.

Chaos Dwarf Heroes painted battle-ready+

Chaos Dwarf Despot Battle Standard Bearer conversion. I cut off the axe at the hilt, fetched my trusty Dremel, took a deeeeeep breath and carefully drilled through the closed fist. Worked way better than I feared, tbh! The pole is a brass rod, bottom is a simple plastic skull and the banner top is, I think, a GW minotaur head. The cut-off axe got a handle and I fixed it on his back, cause I anyway do not have the back-mounted bann…

Thanks! Only two models from the Big Hats to go before CDOffline, albeit big ones.
I would love to also get past -50 on the BATG by then, we’ll see. That Blood Bowl team looks very attractive…

Chaos Dwarf Big Hat Lords painted battle-ready+
The Lords and their mounts got the same level of additional work as the Heroes. I’m especially happy with the Lammasu, and it also means my Big Hats are technically finished. I will try to get the bases of the infantry to match the lava style I adopted with the Bull Centaurs, and I want to quickly paint up very basic shields for the Warriors and characters.
Plus I’ve reached not only my primary goal of painting all my Big hats before CDOffline, I also painted 50 models by the end of March, which was my second goal. Only the thrice-cursed Imperium magazine is keeping my from the silver BATG-medal.

Ah, iconic Chaos Dwarf goodness. What a classic model. I spent a little more time on him than on the regular troop, mainly the skin and main colour highlights. I wanted to paint the Taurus in more “realistic” colours, originally I planned on grey.

It looked alright on its own, but it just didn’t fit well with the limited palette of the other…

I went with the main red colour for the Lammasu and it’s a great fit. I started with a Liche Purple base coat, which set nice shading right from the start. Like with the Lords and Heroes, the Scab Red got a highlight layer of Scab Red and Warlock Purple for a nice finish. The wings got the same blue I used on the Sorcerer’s robe to tie them together (the coat is fas…

Another last minute progress here (this competition runs on UK time, right?) but I managed to paint 9 Squigs.

Painted 9 Squigs to complete the first unit of Squig Herders.
First time I tried using a glazing technique. Although I am reasonable satisfied with the result, it didn’t turn out in a way I was aiming for. But now I know a few things I’ll change for the next batch.

Another 9 Squigs for my Night Goblin Auxiliaries. Need to undo the Hobgrot-fueled BATG damage…

Painted the next 9 Squigs for the second unit of Squig Herdaz.
I refined my glazing technique a little and gave the pink areas an additional highlight. It’s definitely an improvement over the first batch, but I still have an idea for the last unit.
This unit also includes five of the early “gnarly” Squigs. So goofy! But that little dragon one is still legit cool.

Yet another end-of-the-month buzzer beater.
12 Squigs for my Squig Herdaz, finally canceling out the Hobgrot purchase - with one model extra to once again climb the silver platform! Eagle-eyed readers may notice Daemonsmith Rosi in the background taking a keen interest in one of the squigs, and the one with the perfect pose for it as well.

Painted the last 12 Squigs for my Squig Herdaz.
I further refined my glazing technique and am quite happy with the result. These had more layers and highlights done than the last ones, and the gradient from Sotek Green to Stegadon Scale Green is nicer. The pink came out a little better too. Plus these latest models are just stunning. That current Gloomspite range is nothing short of fantastic.

But I always wanted to have these two, especially that iconic Boss. Need to rip away all that junk, though. And strip the paint, obviously

Painted the first two units of Squig Hoppers.
I am quite happy how the green and blue look together. I saw it already with the Squig Herdaz, but having large areas within the same model gives an even better look.
They nicely illustrate the evolution of this iconic Night Goblin unit and even the greater WHFB aesthetic. First we have the very old pewter models, from WHFB 4th and 5th edition. The Squigs (later renamed Gnarly Squigs, for the time when both sculpts were available) are very goofy an…

And here they are already!
The last 10 Squig Hoppers. I have now painted 100 models, which is not to shabby for me. And I would have gotten away with the gold if it weren’t for those meddling kids…

And here we have the last 10 Squig Hoppers, these are from the current Gloomspite range. As with all these models, I love them very much. Lots of character and detail, nice variety, dynamic poses, a joy to paint. Aesthetically we have serious Goblins riding serious Squigs here, compared to the either/or approach of the previous sculpts
I again changed my recipe for the Squig hide, but I am very happy with it. And it was a little faster as well.
Actually, these models represent q…

Painted the first five characters for my Night Goblins. Overall not too much hassle, the Squigs were much more difficult with the pre-shading and the glazing and so on.

Painted the first five characters.
First we have the two excellent models from the infamous Battle for Skull Pass box. I always wanted to have them and snapped them for very cheap on eBay. They were „painted“ but could be salvaged with a nice soak in LA‘s Totally Awesome (nothing beats this stuff at stripping plastic or resin, especially not for 1$ per 950ml)

These models don’t even have too much detail and we’re painted pretty fast. First shaman and big boss done.
Then we have Zarb…
