Golden Hat XXXVII: Hobgoblins

@tjub
Yeah, I’m definitely going to try to finish on time, not sure if I’ll be able to…and I must admit that I’ve thoroughly been enjoying chopping up the hobgrots that @Admiral was kind enough to send to me.
I think I’ve come up with some nice conversions for them…and may Hashut forgive me for saying this, but I kinda like my new “take” on them a bit more than the classic 4th edition miniatures.
:scream:
But as others have said, an extension would be appreciated and slaves sacrificed accordingly :fire:

Not eaten by bears. Ate a silly amount of blueberries, to the annoyance and jokes of my friends and little brother.

Deadline extended to the 24th of September.

It will benefit several entrants, and this should make it calmer in my own calendar. I hope that’s fine with everyone here.

@IronHaiden : Lovely album, thanks for the tip!

@Zanko : Good work! I for one would love to be able to paint miniatures en masse to a nice standard like you do. My record is 30 Clanrats, and 25 Night Goblin Zombies. Otherwise 9 of @Baggronor 's Royal Guard Dwarves and 10 GW Dwarf Miners remain my mass painting records after almost 20 year in this hobby. Not counting the earliest minis, my Dwarfs and my brother’s High Elves, which I painted with lots of quick enthusiasm and shoddy non-Citadel paints before I quickly learnt to paint well from White Dwarf.

Damn, something like Mordheim or Frostgrave would have fit me better. I can work on a few single models for a long time, including sculpting them from scratch, but painting an entire ordinary army of miniatures is far beyond my reach. Army painting is a gift, is my conclusion. One others have. :hatoff:

@Fuggit_Khan : For Artisan’s, yes. Not for Golden Hat, but on the other hand deadline has been extended to 24th of September. Of course, if you enter the hastiest and shoddiest paintjob no one will object. Paint is paint, and all quality levels are welcome. And green and grey paint may actually be accepted.

There is always space for improvments. Originality is fine, but you can always take a concept and sharpen it further true to its spirit and design, including 1990s Perry sculpts. Dear Gobfather.

For instance, if you do it in the same style as the originals, but with better posing, more details, better cloth folds and so on, you will probably make something better even than the great and treasured original.

The matter is that collective creative enterprises like video game or miniature hobby studios have natural creative cycles. Styles change and new style directions are chosen.

On the one hand, it enriches the setting: Chaos Dwarfs sport both 1980s mini-me Chaos Warrior Dwarfs, 1990s big hats, 2000s Hellcannon heavy metal CDs, 2010s Legion of Azgorh plate armour and choo-choo train CDs and so far some 2020s strange indivudual CDs who are part of Chaos warbands. Not even counting fan/community styles. This natural creative cycle of style shifts mean one setting can serve up a whole smörgåsbord of different styles for a single faction, but it also mean that we may not get to see a familiar style get redone true to the original style, but improved upon.

There are many examples in Warhammer to point to. Blizzard’s development of Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo through the years could also be held up as examples. I for one much prefer Blizzard’s 1994-1999 styles than anything that has come after, but they’ve still done neat things which can look great in a different style, not least in Starcraft II.

One aspect of this natural creative cycle of style shifts for fantasy has included a tendency to move further away from historically based designs, toward overblown pure fantasy designs á la World of Warcraft. I expect this wheel to eventually complete its revolution, with historically based designs becoming more popular in fantasy once again.

@tjub : Erratic work scehdule is spot on. Sure, I’ve always had an erratic work schedule except for periods when I’ve landed an ordinary job, but it’s extra erratic these days. Burnout recovery is well under way, which mean I’ve started to help my parents with house renovations and building a cottage. Limited energy and need to relax due to burnout also means it takes a lot of more time. Couple that with all manner of random things, plus bouts of sickness, and you’ve got something to the delight of Tzeentch himself.

Cackles maniacally, in erratic fashion.

Keen indeed to behold the Gobfather’s creation!

@Anzu : Ask and ye shall receive!

Looking forward to all your entries, good folks!

Cheers

Thank you Admiral for the deadline extension.
Very much appreciated!
And praise Hashut that you weren’t eaten by bears (or skewered by vagabond Danes)

My plan was to use these sprues for my hobgoblin entry, but they came out too late. I do like the spider though. How can they be made to work in a chaos dwarf army list? Centaurs? Kdaii things?

They don’t really fit I guess

I got some of those spiders. They are THE VERY DEVIL HIMSELF to put together, if you’ve done more than 2 of them, you’re a better man than I, Zodd

I kinda see that as a challenge but also sort of scared…
I’d like to buy just a sprue of them and a sprue of the goblins…hopefully they will appear on ebay soon.

Cheers for the warning. I do get fed up when things don’t fit right

One of my plans is still to make a Chaos Dwarf-Spider-Centaur. I’m still missing the right models, but that will come!

in mesopotamian history, the great king Gilgamesh fought a scorpion man, you might try to recreate that sort of image

They don’t come with instructions, which is annoying as there are particular parts that have to go in particular places which are easy to miss. There are a number of reviews of them on youtube which will help massively.
I ended up using a combination of green stuff and super glue to put mine together.

I collect citadel spider riders of various vintages and I have hundreds upon hundreds of goblin sculpts. So I was quite keen on the wargames Atlantic goblins/spiders combo.

I refunded my purchase though.

The greenskins don’t look warhammer enough and their proportions aren’t heroic enough to go with my other boyz.

The spiders are the most anatomically spideriffic - and therefore also a poor fit. Plus; as stated, they’re not just a nightmare to assemble - but fragile once you do.

That sounds like a cool option too! :metal:

Ive got 40 of these spiders, really nice and great quality. Goes very well together with GW as well.

Well I should finally get my hobgrots all converted by tomorrow, gives me about a week to paint them.
Thank you Hashut (and @Admiral) for the extension.
It’s kinda funny how real life gets in the way of our hobby commitments…I recently finally received my second Pfizer vaccine jab, and it knocked me out of hobby work for a couple of days because my shoulders, arms and hands were stiff and painful from side effects.
Couldn’t hold a knife to save my life…which is utterly shameful for a Hobgoblin.
:hocho: :skull:
Anyways, I’m really looking forward to seeing all of the entries!
Hobgoblins rule !!!
