Grim Dark Chaos Dwarfs

Amazingly painted. The red patterns make the off white armour so good. To me a cross between deathwing terminators and chaos dwarves. I think you are right to focus on rank and file 1st. Get through them on initial enthusiasm. Leave all the tinkery bits for later as a reward. Will you rebase them on squares for the new warhammer edition coming out in a year or so? Base shape is such a big decision at this point.

Thanks @Zoddtheimmortal, much appreciated.
I think Iā€™ve worked out the basing for now, AoS will be the first bases for these, once Iā€™ve finished army I think do a couple of thematic KoW bases. Although seeing the new KoW Vanguard box I may just keep these based for AoS. I have a different plan for the old world stuff which Iā€™ll update on my other thread when I eventually have something to update :unamused: :grinning:

Thatā€™s the plan for now anyway, the only thing certain in my hobby is that nothing is certain :man_shrugging:t2:

Truth!

I keep going back and forth with thoughts of a re-base. Enough that I end up not doing anything. :smirk: Looking great. Looking forward to seeing what you do next.

Somehow, Iā€™ve only just seen this thread and what a glorious return!

Absolutely stunning work and insane to think that this is your quick and easy form
Just as fantastic as the paintscheme and application is the fun youā€™ve been having doing them. Definitely not something to underestimate.

For your war machines, Iā€™d say you could add the white on barrels/rockets and such - basically the smooth surfaces and then add weathering and heat warping etc.

The red tinge to the skin is perfect to boot.

Have you any fluff behind these guys? E.g. the armour is painted white with the ash of their foes/slaves?

Thank you Mr Blessings

Iā€™ve just read through this thread from start to finish. I loved painting those warriors. Funny you should mention the Warmachines as that is what started to derail it.

So the infantry went great, loved painting them and everything I was trying worked then after that I had a couple of failures in a row. Something as nice and simple as the battleboard didnā€™t work out as Iā€™d expected, no worries I thought Iā€™ll come back to it carried on with the Taurus wing and by the end of the first one the dotted details I was doing really didnā€™t look great as I think I over did them and another failā€¦ again no worries I thought Iā€™ll come back to it and started to work on the Hellcannon when yet again struggled to down on a mini what I was going for, mainly with the glow of the barrel this time.

So as much as the foot soldiers were a success the other things I had done certainly werenā€™t.

Iā€™m very aware this post seems rather negative however thatā€™s definitely isnā€™t how Iā€™m feeling about these guys, just a symptom of talking about everything thatā€™s gone wrong, Iā€™m still very much looking forward to this whole army! Iā€™ve
Just need to work out how to go about some of the other things in it. Looking back (which is always a lot clearer) I think part of the problem was definitely that I was trying to do it all under the ā€˜quick and easyā€™ theme of the warriors but that just wasnā€™t working for some things and I need to take a bit more care in what I was doing with them, can still be quick though. I also need to rethink how I will paint some of the additional things like Warmachines and @HashutsBlessings and others are right in how to apply the white, there certainly wonā€™t be as much of it on them.

So when I get back to them Iā€™m definitely going to start again with finishing the other 10 warriors and 20 Blunderbuss units with a tutorial on the steps to do those. I think Iā€™m also going to try and think about the fluff, I think thatā€™s a great idea to help figure out what I want to do with the rest of the army in terms of how I paint things like the Warmachines

Iā€™m puzzled a wee bit. Those boxes say AoS but arenā€™t they Forge World models?

I think you may have a touch of OCD (or more correctly spelt CDO). i donā€™t think I have many that Iā€™m 100% happy with.

You may be right there, Iā€™m definitely getting a lot less dogmatic on my approach to minis now a days which Iā€™m sure will still be around when I get these back out on the painting table!

By box do you mean the pictures with the AoS banner? I had a little habit a while back of inserting the Game system logo into my picturesā€¦ 40k, Star Wars Legion and AoS, I quite liked it but not enough to keep doing it apparently

Okayā€¦ I know Iā€™m a lazy painter and Iā€™d rather have 20 models to okay standard then 2 to this level of awesomeness. Iā€™d like to believe I could pull this off if I took my time

The unit of warriors looks terrific! The weathering is beautiful. Spot on! Now I need to see moreā€¦ we have to keep you motivated to finish this project

It really is great to know these setbacks havenā€™t dampened your enthusiasm for the project.

Sometimes, it is good to sit back and re-evaluate an approach. I think youā€™re right that some of the centrepieces (warmachines and monsters) need a little more care and attention, but Iā€™m equally sure everyone else would be astounded at your quick and easy method on them nonetheless!

The new daemonsmith is looking good and his helm/hat gives another main colour you can make use of on those bigger pieces, with the red.

Maybe itā€™s a case of take some time on a big piece and then treat yourself to some more infantry as a reward (counter to the order most people do that in :stuck_out_tongue: )!

I do think developing a little lore may help too. It might lead you to new colours or methods for the strugglesome pieces, might reinvigorate your display board ideas and so on. And you can let your current work dictate the lore as well.

Donā€™t be disheartened, if we didnā€™t make mistakes we would never improve ourselves.

And even then - remember we are our own worst critics. What is a failure to you will be a masterpiece to someone else.

Cheers all

Just a quick one before I reply properlyā€¦

Iā€™ve actually gone back to the infantry to try something I always wanted to try. I held off on glowing weapons originally because I thought it may detract from the theme or even draw too much focus, I also thought it would take too much time making the other quick processes null and void.

Iā€™ve given it a go today though and surprised by how quick it took with wet blending, pretty sure it doesnā€™t take too much away from the scheme eitherā€¦what do you guys think? With or without the glowing effect?

Again, love the way you paint those guys. Never saw any kind of paintjob fit the LoA sculpts like this - one might think that they were designed for it. :+1: For what my opinion is worth, I think I prefer them without the glow on the weapon. Maybe itā€™s just me, but I find that it does draw the eye away from the central grittiness and bleakness of the scheme. Just my impression.

@Zoddtheimmortal thatā€™s a good shout, would certainly help in terms of time it takes too

@Antenor thatā€™s exactly what I was concerned about first time around, I like the effect Iā€™m just not sure how well it fits with the schemeā€¦speaking of which thank you for your kind words :+1:t2:

@Karnus thank you mate, certainly am my own worst critic both in and out of the hobby :man_shrugging:t2: a learning curve it was and I think these guys will be better for it as you said

@HashutsBlessing you are right my friend it has not and will not dampen my love for these Chaotic little creatures :+1:t2: your also right about the lore I think, I always enjoy the stories behind games and the characters in them, if I could find a good one for these it could spur me on.
I always loved the narrative progression style games, like Crusade is doing now in 40k, Warhammer used to have one but I canā€™t remember the name of it

Thank you @MichaelX  , the way it changes when
the weathering goes on is my favourite part of painting these :+1:t2:

Thank you @Oxymandias :vulcan_salute:t2:

Youā€™re utmostly welcome. I hope the spark for your lore comes to you soon!

Iā€™m racking my brains for the narrative campaign, but drawing blanks. The only stuff coming to mind is Blood in the Badlands, Mighty Empires, Storm of Chaos and the Nemesis Crown.

For what itā€™s worth, if the time constraint is minimal, I like the glowing weapons -it draws the eye near the helm and since thereā€™re no facial features/eyes, the more that does that, the better. It also looks great. That said, I donā€™t know if it will pull focus away instead when on any fireglaives as their weapon heads are further away from their faceless visages.
