"In which we imagine EvilFuzzyDoom happy" [BATG 2024]

1 on the pile.

It’s a Chaos Lord, whose dinky spear is gonna get cut off and replaced with a big banner, so he can be by Battle Standard Bearer and I can be sad about the dreadful low-quality freehand I will inevitably do on him.

A box of 10 chaos warhounds arrived today.

No picture, because the box is one of the plain mail-order ones and so is boring.

But that’s it! I’m done buying models until April! No más! I swear!

10 on the pile.

This batch have been on the desk for a couple of weeks, but I got the few minutes required to finish them off this morning.

5 command models for the Marauders. There’s three more models and then I’ll have two 12-model units done.

Stuff it, I’m calling these guys done.

I can run them as a 20-model unit or as two 12-model units. I’ll call it one completed unit for Shame Golf.

Hi all, just a quick proof-of-life update - it’s been a pretty bonkers month, and I’ve been far too busy to do any hobbying.

I had a little time today to sit at the desk, and assembled a few things.

Hopefully I’ll get some painting time soon, but my wife and I have a little travelling to do first

Back from travelling, and this little fella was waiting to greet me:

A GSC Clamavus, who will be the master vox in my command squad.

1 added to the pile.

I’m hoping to get some hobby time in the evenings this coming week, so I can get below zero in time for my inevitable April blowout (birthdays will do that). I just have to decide what wants painting!

Anyone remember Turnip28?

Well, a few years ago I got started on a force of root vegetables just as a hobby exercise. I got six Fodder and a Snob done before other projects got in the way and I left it alone.

Back from my honeymoon, I’ve been reviewing the projects list and thought maybe I could knock this one off fairly easily, so I pulled out the rest of the Fodder unit and painted the last six, and also based them all up:

Dreadful photo, I know, but it’s six off the pile nonetheless. Just off to the left there’s six brutes who should be a breeze to paint up, too - but more on that next time.

Love it! @KhamdrimSkyMaster would appreciate these!

Someday soon I’ll make a unit of Rootshut worshippers using Antenor sculpts and Rut the brazen bastard.

Great inspiration in your unit

Thanks Reaver! I got super into Turnip28 for like fifteen minutes and then the models have all been in a box since; I’m not even sure why I pulled them out to work on them.

Today, though, I received two boxes from which I need 3 bitz:

I mainly got these for the eagle off the razorback and the crew from the buggy. I’m gonna have to find an actual use for the ridgerunner, I guess.

I’ve gotten some hobby time in, and managed to complete a few things.

First up, six Brutes for my Turnip28 collection:

That leaves my assembled Turnip collection completely painted. I’m not certain at this point whether I’m going to make any more of them, although they are a bit of fun to work on. I still have a fairly large stash of Perry Historicals that I bought for the project, so I might rifle around in the pile for bits to make another Toff and some Chaff if the urge strikes me. For now, though, they’re done.

Additionally, I’ve repainted three Sentinels that I’ve had kicking around for at least twenty years:

They’ve been through the wars, and never got based, so I did a little surgery: I removed the random additional armour and gubbins that a certain teenager adorned them with; I clipped off the roll cages since they’d been damaged some time ago; and I gave all the pilots new heads to match the rest of my same-era guard collection.

Someone in my circle has been posting pictures of his batch painting, so I’ve been inspired to pull a pile of old guardsmen out of storage and see if I can apply the same discipline:

We’ll see how we go.

Nine models off the pile, and that brings me back into the negatives!

I took the day off today to chill and paint and watch Wrestlemania (because why not?), and even accounting for breaks to actually pay attention, I painted for about eight hours today, all told.

By the time the main event kicked off, this is what I had achieved:

And it occurred to me, that the old paint scheme I’ve been religiously following for about fifteen years is pretty miserable. It’s a fairly simple base-highlight-wash approach, but there’s such a lot of steps that need to be done with precision, multiple times.

The five models I got Rhinox hide on took over an hour just for that colour.

I decided to try a test model finishing the scheme off with contrast paints for the skin, brown and red:

It took twenty minutes and I basically can’t tell the difference. The brown isn’t the same, but I don’t think I care.

After lunch, I painted four more, and will be completing this army in the same fashion:

They were much faster.

There’s still about 60 of these guys to go, but for now it’s five off the pile.

Four more:

Painted using the revised style with Contrast. These are very much “get it done” models. I have to keep thinking of the finished product, which will be an absolute sea of Cadians.

I like this idea. Although my “pile of shame” aka minis does not seem to be lessening. Of course if I bought less minis that would help…

@Willmark BATG has been an amazing motivator for me. Even if the line doesn’t actually move, it’s completely reinvigorated my love for mini painting.

I’ve painted 500+ minis in the last two years, almost entirely motivated by the urges to share what I’m doing and tick stuff off the list. Yes, the actual pile of shame is staying roughly the same size, but I feel like I’m getting a pretty clear idea of what models in the pile will never get painted and should probably get moved on.

Plus, I’ve basically figured out how to paint at scale, I have a very realistic idea of how many models I paint in a year, which helps me avoid overcommitting. With the blog to show off completed models, I have motivation to try new things and to refine my techniques. I’ve figured out how to take acceptable pictures of minis (although I need a new photobox). It’s been great.

Even when the updates are piecemeal, like they are at the moment, I always feel like I’m making progress. I feel like I’m responsibly engaging with my collection now, rather than just pouring more and more money into plastic crack!

Today’s update? Four more dudes:

I can almost field a fully-painted 4th-edition-compliant Imperial Guard Infantry platoon! Yes, I’ll get the light box out to take a group photo once the platoon is completely finished.

Four off the pile.

I’ve run out of Green Stuff and need more, but I didn’t want to mail order just a tube of putty.

So, I got a Sentinel.

Plus one.

Also I got a giant.

i enjoyed painting my Aleguzzler Gargants a lot last year, I’ve very nearly got myself a Mega-Gargant a few times. I’ve decided to try and have some restraint until my finances improve a bit, though, so that’s not happening for now.

I’m a member of a heap of secondhand Warhammer pages on Facebook marketplace, so from time to time an amazing deal shows up. I guess the Aleguzzler Gargant issues of Stormbringer just dropped, because this guy was cheaper than splitting a box of three.

Fun to paint and cheap to pick up is a great combination!

One more on the pile.

This post is the best and most wholesome ad for BATG we seen in ages. Maybe ever.

I’ve definitely said before. A bunch of models painted and a near zero batg score is still a huge win for the hobby and for this forum getting pic drops to enjoy, as you said. Your comment on highlighting which minis in the pile tend to get passed over consistently is a valuable lesson as well. I should probably have a hard think on that w.r.t. some of my older shame.

Imma just leave this here

Thanks Reaver!

BATG has been a huge boost for me, not only hobby wise but in terms of understanding my work ethic and approach to larger projects. I haven’t really managed to apply it to anything in my work life, but it’s still gains.

I know I can make a photobooth but I have limited space, so I have to be able to pack it away. Just straight-up buying one that folds up is easier. I will start using a lint roller though.

Speaking of gains? I’ve painted two heavy weapon teams, which - as per the last few years - I count as 2 models each. It’s because there’s two dudes on the base, and because I never moved on from 2nd edition in my heart.

With that, I have finished two units, and figured I should pull out the photobooth. I’ve upgraded my phone and need to re-learn how to work with it in a way that produces pictures that aren’t bigger than the board’s upload limit, too!

The first is a command squad, with all the options available. I can run it as a Cadian Command Squad or a Platoon Command Squad, and if options come back, I have those too.

The other is an infantry squad, with options to run as a Cadian or a standard Infantry Squad. Again, future-proofed and past-proofed while I’m at it.

This actually marks the completion of an entire platoon, compliant from 3rd through 7th edition. It only took twenty years! I only wish I had a good way

I have another platoon almost done so I will probably have some more pictures of finished, outdated Cadians soon. The third platoon is… yeah, still coming.

Makes sense, definitely share what you end up with in that thread. I’m sure you’re not alone there and the hope is to collect all different kinds of approaches.

Nice work polishing up those guard units!

Teeny tiny update:

My Chaos Knights weren’t all from the same edition, and it made me cranky. So I spent an unreasonable amount of money getting my hands on a single Chaos Knight.

One on the pile.
