Seeing as over the years I’ve designed a cd automaton probably at least 6 times. I like the fact that they’ve designed it on CD proportions, I like the use of Daemon fire and chains. I like the script. Having a bull head was always going to happen. I like the smoke, with the flames it’s quite atmospheric
On the negative side, without adjustments it’s basically a golem, which I have always thought they needed something clearly more steampunk mechanical. I.e. with really obvious robot joints and maybe pistons. The models are hard to pose without being creative, and the flames out the top need work to be unique for each model. The lower legs are just too short and stubby for my liking. Also the sculpting is quite “flat” in terms of all the plates sitting together, which does make it seem more like a golem. The tail is a bit cartoonish. I stuck it on for this one but I’ll give it a miss on the next one. Plus there’s almost nothing on the model that is obviously chaos.
But overall it went together very cleanly. I’d give it 3.5 out of 5.
I’m thinking for the next one I might use chaos Knights claw fists and put flames on them, effectively a mace
Oooh ok, that must’ve been white tack that I saw in the photos then… I thought maybe you scraped down the backs of the shields and made a custom handle with plasticard .
Regardless, definitely want to see photos of these painted up!!

Happy with how my test model came out. I wanted to get a general look of Tyranid themed armour with the hive fleet kraken striations. But also like he’s walking around with a nuclear weapon in his hand! Hence the black cloth is shaded brown with corrosion and grime.
The green on the hand weapon I was of two minds (warpstone/ nurgle blade), but the green theme is an army spot colour. I resisted the urge for object source lighting with the blade, I’ll save that for things with flames.
I might revisit the blade and do green lightning on it. We’ll see
Something a little different. This was a front cover I did for Word of Hashut #5 from the old forum. Summer 2009. Ironic that with the scale armour pattern he wouldn’t look out of place in helsmiths army imo.
Won’t be in a hurry to paint another of these soon! Flames and smoke are hard. I think the additional height and pushing up the shoulder pads was an excellent change.
Probably can’t see it in these photos, but I did some green light in the recesses all along the arm that’s firing, but not the non firing arm.
The logic here btw is the areas directly touching flames are black iron, but actually painted mostly dark green blending to black. Because the contrast works far better.
Not sure how I’ve missed this blog up to now, not everything looks fantastic! Those shields are so awesome. And that WoH Cover Art is still top tier stuff!
I’m going to subscribe to this thread so I don’t miss any more updates!
